History Wardrobe Presents: 'All Writers Great and Small' by Lucy Adlington
St Edwards Community Hall,Tadcaster Road, York YO24 1GG
Friday 1st November, 2019

On Friday 1st November over 60 Members came to St. Edward's Community Hall to hear Historian Lucy Addlington of The History Wardrobe give a very entertaining and informative talk entitled 'All Writers Great and Small'. This was a celebration of Yorkshire authors, from the Brontës to James Herriot (and a lot of other good ones in between). As always with this excellent speaker, clothes played a large part in this lively literary show - dresses and outfits ranged from 19th Century formal wear, through farm smocks to modern overalls. For Lucy, the evening had added poignancy as this was the last time she was to give this particular talk.  There was also exciting news from Lucy that her new book on “Women’s Lives and Clothes in WW2” had just been published and another title has been optioned for a film.

The evening was rounded off with a Yorkshire based raffle, wine and nibbles plus the oportunity to talk to Lucy and get closer to the clothes and books.

Overall an excellent evening from which we were able to raise £445.03 to add to our 2019 donation to the National Trust.

The Summer Garden Party at Goddards
Tadcaster Road, YO24 1GG
Tuesday 6th August, 2019 at 2.30pm

The sun came out for our Annual Summer Garden Party and we took advantage of the warm weather to remain in the garden. As usual, our volunteers provided a good supply - and selection - of sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee with strawberries to follow. All in all a very good afternoon. We were also able to take full advantage of a wander around the gardens, which are looking extremely good at the moment.

There was Disabled Parking only at Goddards which we hope did not put people off from coming. Goddards is, however, easy to get to by bus. The number 4, 13, 840 and 843 buses stop regularly near Goddards (ask for the Marriott hotel stop) and come from (and back to) York railway station approximately every 10 minutes.

Summer Fair at St. Crux
Friday 28th June, 2019 from 10am

The weather was kind for our annual fundraising Summer Fair at St Crux. There were plenty of books and bric-a-brac to buy and scones, cakes and sandwiches to enjoy.

A steady flow of visitors came, ate and bought and we ended the day making £761 to add to our 2019 donation to the National Trust.

A vote of thanks has to go to all the volunteers who turned up to work on the stalls and in the cafe. The sandwiches and cakes really were a treat. Thanks also to all the members of the Committee who came along to manage and support the event.

A good afternoon of chocolate making - and eating
A large and appreciative audience turned up on the 14th May for the latest York Association of the National Trust event - an excellent and amusing talk by Andrew Thwaite, Chocolatier (https://www.andrewthwaite.org.uk/) showing the journey from cocoa bean to finished product. Plus a chocolate making demonstration with the results being eaten by the audience.
