Forthcoming Talks

Saturday 22nd February 2025 at 2.30pm

Glennis Whyte “Elizabeth Montagu & the Bluestocking Movement”

Marriott Room, York Central Library, Museum Street, YO1 7DS

Elizabeth Montagu was born in the Treasurer’s House on 2 October 1718. Elizabeth was married in 1742, at the age of 20, to a man 50 years older than herself, the MP Edward Montagu, wealthy proprietor of a coalmine and grandson of an earl. He died in 1775 leaving Elizabeth a wealthy woman who increased her inheritance by shrewd business investments in the rising price of coal.

In the mid-18th century together with her friend, Elizabeth Vesey, Montagu set up an informal social and educational movement in their London homes. Which became known as the Bluestocking Movement modelled on the French salons, these gatherings marked a break with traditional, non-intellectual women’s activities.

YANT 54th AGM, Talk and Lunch

Saturday 8th March 2025 at 10.30am. AGM starts at 11am

In the Bedingfield Room, The Bar Convent, York

Following the close of the meeting, there will be a talk and lunch

Our guest speaker is Rosemary Cooke - “The Nightingale Shore Murder”

This is the true story of the unsolved murder of Florence Nightingale's goddaughter. Florence Nightingale Shore was a respected Queen's Nurse who worked for five years in France from 1914 and was decorated for her bravery in World War 1. Tragically, on her return to England, Florence was murdered on a moving train - a classic 'closed room' murder. Despite the best efforts of the local police, Scotland Yard and famous pathologist Bernard Spilsbury, the crime was never solved. But now a new suspect has been identified and another mystery has been uncovered in the shadowy characters surrounding the crime. After the main talk you will have the chance to discuss who you think is the suspect.
