The Welsh capital city has experienced a renaissance of its own in recent years and now boasts a revitalised waterfront and city centre which is home to innovative architecture as well as historic buildings, as we will discover on a gentle walking tour. Travelling into the surrounding area we discover St Fagans National History Museum, one of Europe’s finest open air museums and Wales’ most popular heritage attraction, along with Tredegar House, one of the best examples of a 17th century Charles II country house in the UK. We also visit Cardiff Castle, whose enchanting fairy tale towers conceal the elaborate and splendid interior of a castle whose history spans nearly 2000 years.
Holiday Review: Cardiff & South Wales
6th - 9th October, 2017
Our trip to Wales began with a stop at Coughton Court (pronounced Coat on) in Warwickshire. A historic house lived in by the same Catholic family for 600 years, members of which were involved in the Gunpowder plot. The house was built around a courtyard with an imposing gatehouse, the roof of which gives great views of the surrounding area. A large walled garden is stuffed with plants and outside it there is a lake and a bog garden. An unusual feature is its two churches, one catholic and one protestant. Then a long but interesting journey through the lovely countryside of the Wye and Usk valleys and over the head of the valleys road passing Welsh towns now much changed with the demise of the mining industry.

On Saturday we embarked on a bus tour of Cardiff centre with a local guide. We walked around Cardiff Bay and saw the Assembly building and the Millennium Arts Centre. The change from the derelict docks to the present layout was staggering. We spent time in the National Museum containing amongst many exhibits a priceless collection of art and sculpture much of which was left to the museum by two sisters who made money from coal and spent it well. The ground floor was full of laughter and chat with lots of children enjoying hands on experiences of aspects of science and natural history. Our visit to Cardiff Castle was a revelation as we toured amazing rooms heavily decorated by William Burgess for the Marquis of Bute in the C19th. Our last visit was to Llandaff Cathedral on the outskirts of the city. It was damaged by a bomb in the war and George Pace the York architect was tasked with some of the restoration work. The building is dominated by the towering statue of Christ in Majesty by Jacob Epstein not liked by everyone.

On Sunday our first stop was Tredegar House near Newport, via a brief stop at Caerphilly Castle. This is a rare house built in the reign of Charles II and recently acquired by the National Trust. It is entirely wrapped in plastic at present for massive restoration work. The volunteers here were especially friendly and chatty. Then we went on to St Fagans castle, the National Museum of Wales. On this large site are over 50 buildings rescued from demolition or ruin from all over Wales. We were able to watch a blacksmith and a thatcher at work and visit a church, shops, fairground, cottages and farmhouses. Our last stop of the day was Dyffryn gardens set around an imposing Edwardian house. Some of the vast gardens were laid out in rooms with some autumn colour to enjoy.

On our way home on Monday we stopped at Hidcote, one of the gardens to see in Britain. Although not at its best in October, at least it was not crowded as it always is in Spring and Summer.

This was a varied and interesting trip especially for me as I was born in Cardiff and was amazed at the changes since I was last there. Michel Gill was an excellent and informative guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area as he has lived there in the past.

Holiday Itinerary: Cardiff & South Wales
6th - 9th October, 2017
Day 1 – Friday 6 October 2017
We depart by coach from York and head for South Wales, stopping en route for refreshments (not included). We will break our journey with a visit to Coughton Court which has been the home of the Throckmorton family since the house was built in 1530. The 25 acres of breathtaking gardens which surround the house include an extensive collection of plants which are also offered for sale. The Courtyard was based on Elizabethan knot gardens, where the Sunken Gardens are heavily planted with scented roses. The Walled garden is the jewel in the crown and was opened by Alan Titchmarsh in summer 1996 and it includes a rose labyrinth with around 200 different varieties. The Bog Garden is edged with ferns and Hostas leading you amongst a wonderful collection of native marsh plants and exotic treasures.
Following our visit we will continue to our hotel, the Park Inn by Radisson Cardiff North, where a welcome drink and dinner will be served in the evening.

Day 2 – Saturday 7 October 2017
This morning we will join a local guide for a guided tour of Cardiff, including the city arcades, Bute Park, the Norwegian Church, the Quayside and the elegant civic centre. The tour covers 2000 years of history and introduces us to a host of characters from martyrs to marquesses. The tour will be mainly by coach with some gentle walking. The tour will end at the National Museum and Gallery, where there will be an opportunity for lunch (not included) and time to go round the museum, which houses Wales’s national art, geology and natural history collections.
Later in the afternoon we visit Cardiff Castle. The enchanting fairy tale towers conceal an elaborate and splendid interior of a castle whose history spans nearly 2000 years. After the Norman Conquest the castle’s Keep was built and a number of medieval fortifications and dwellings followed. The castle fell into the possession of many noble families until it passed to the Bute family by marriage in 1766. The 2nd Marquess of Bute was responsible for turning Cardiff into the world’s greatest coal exporting port and when the castle and fortune passed to his son, he was by the 1860s reported as the richest man in the world. He employed William Burges to decorate a suite of rooms, each with its own theme including Italian, Arabian and Mediterranean. A guided tour is included here (may split into two groups).
We return to our hotel where dinner is served in the evening.

Day 3 – Sunday 8 October 2017
Following breakfast we will travel to the St Fagans National History Museum. Opened in 1948 it has established itself as one of Europe’s finest open air museums and Wales’ most popular heritage attraction. Displaying Welsh life over the past 500 years it stands in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagans castle, a late 16th century manor house donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth. The 100 acre parkland has over forty original buildings re-erected from various parts of Wales which include a school, chapel, Workmen’s Institute along with several workshops where craftsmen demonstrate the traditional skills and sell their produce.
Lunch is available here (not included).
We depart for Caerphilly Castle (photo opportunity only) and continue to Tredegar House (NT) in Newport. The house is set in the 90 acre Tredegar Park and is one of the best examples of a 17th century Charles II country house mansion in the United Kingdom.
We return to our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 4 – Monday 9 October 2017
This morning, after breakfast, we will check out of hotel and depart for our final visit of the tour, the gardens of Hidcote Manor (NT), near Chipping Campden. Although among the best known gardens in Britain, Hidcote Manor still has the power to startle. It was begun before World War I by an American, Major Lawrence Johnston, who devised a type of garden that many think of as quintessentially English. It is a garden built up of separate rooms, each connected to the rest but often with blazing contrasts, laid out in a disciplined setting. Everywhere something enticing is glimpsed through an opening, across a pool or framed by a gate.
Following our visit we continue our homeward journey, with arrival due back in York in the evening.
